Characters in the Golden Age

Ilia

By the time Aili meets her, she's an ancient woman with grey eyes and wild white hair. Ilia is a Master Herbalist. She's been around so long that nobody knows how old she really is. Nobody dares guess, and she's not telling.

She teaches Aili all about herbs and how to heal without magic, giving Aili a purpose without magic. Aili soon becomes her best herb collector, able to find the rare plants and harvest the best ingredients for Ilia's potions. Ilia's teaching allows Aili to find food in the forest easily. She'll never starve as she wanders around on adventures.

Of course, she has adventures of her own, and a long life of stories to tell. Ilia has seen and done so many things, and is the only person around who has ever seen the magical creatures of old that Aili has only read about.

Eri

A young knight mage and the apprentice to Knight-Master Brannon. He's seen Ilia around the castle. They hit it off as friends quickly. Looking forward to a long career as a knight-mage, where he can protect the land and people he loves, Eri depends on his friends as they navigate the changing world together.

Brave and strong, Eri knows he has a lot to learn. As an apprentice, he learns all about navigating the complex world of castle politics in a way Ilia never sees. Still, he's happiest when they head out among the everyday people and travel the land, camping and staying at outposts throughout Athia.

Knight-Master Brannon

Head of the Knight-Mages, he oversees all aspects of security for Athia. Though he does not protect the King personally, he has some say over who does. With many Knight-Mages assisting him, he ensures Athia is safe from outside threats, as well as ensuring people follow laws and rules set by the king.

A long-time friend of Loni, they have always had a friendly rivalry going back as far as being apprentices. While they seldom work together, their paths cross regularly. Both have the same goal - a peaceful home where the residents can thrive and prosper

Loni

The King's Champion, Loni answers directly to the ruler of Athia. A skilled swordswoman and magic user, she'll face any challenge presented to her. Always ready for a friendly duel, she's more than ready for a real fight. Willing to chase her targets across Athia, nothing will stop her.

She and Ilia formed a strong bond over the years before The Last Dragon. Training the young Ilia in swordsmanship, she gives the young woman as much mentoring as she can. Not always close to the castle, they find time to meet when Loni does come back.

When you're the King's Champion, you go where you're ordered, when you're ordered. For this strong-willed woman, this usually isn't an issue. When the King starts behaving erratically, what's a woman with a strong moral code to do?

Later Years

Aili Aldoni

Known as the "Girl without Magic" growing up, Aili was excluded from magic lessons and normal socializing with friends. She learned herbalism and how to survive in the forest, and spent most of her time with a couple of Mages who taught her to thrive, despite her handicap.

Aili has brown hair and green eyes, is short and athletic, and spends much of her time in the forests with Leya. Her abilities are unusual, so it takes an intelligent and free thinking mage to help her discover them.

Leya

Aili's best friend and faithful companion, Leya's a cheeky pony who knows what she likes. She's been with Aili since both were young, and they spend hours wandering the wild places collecting herbs for Ilia, the Master Herbalist. When Aili sets off to make her own future, of course Leya goes with her.

Andvari Aleyn

Andvari runs the Scouts, a group dedicated to defending and conserving the forests. They deal with threats of both magical and natural origins, from forest fires and floods to magical accidents and diseases.

He becomes Aili's teacher, and must figure out how to help her control her powers.

An expert in concealment and sneaking, this Earth Mage has a knack with animals, though he's no herbalist. A tall and muscular man who keeps fit wandering the woods, he has dark brown hair and deep blue eyes.

Kyson Solin

Andvari's Scout partner, Kyson prefers the wild places to cities. A specialist in wolves and their behavior, Kyson will jump at any chance to go find the local packs and keep track of them.

He specializes in Air Magic, with a real talent for influencing the minds of others. His abilities to survive and thrive in magic duels are nearly unmatched, and he can perform advanced Air Magic with ease.

Like most Scouts, Kyson is tall and fit, though stronger than most. He has black hair and dark eyes.

Darik

Darik works for Aili's father as the Stable Manager. Only high status mages keep horses, and they employ the best to care for them. A Master Earth Mage, Darik has a way with horses that's nearly unmatched. He doesn't talk about his past or where he came from.

He mentors Aili as she grows up, teaching her all about horses and riding. Darik takes her into the forest as a child and shows her how to not only survive, but thrive. Aili learns to track and navigate dense brush, as well as how to forage for food and build shelters, all from Darik.
